RAJ Song of the Week - Rubber by Yuck
Raj is back for this week's SOTW (albeit two days late; Raj apologizes). This week's song is "Rubber" by UK band Yuck. This song is a loud, churning, slow jam for stoners in love, replete with distorto guitars, heaps of screeching feedback, and all the crashing cymbals you can handle. Plus, the video is absolutely bizarre and utterly original (and also NSFW!).
After viewing it for the first time, I realized I loved it but was completely baffled as to why (other than the psychedelic qualities; and of course, the nudity). After mulling it over a bit, I realized that what I love about this song/video is that the sound and style remind me so much of the mid-'90's college indie rock that was the soundtrack to my formative days as an undergrad. Visions of Matt Pinfield geeking out over this band on 120 Minutes fill my head each time I give it a listen. It has a certain indie film soundtrack quality to it that was such a big part of my musical preferences while in college (hell, to this day I still try to construct the most appropriate film scene to each song I hear that really grips me).
Anyway, props to Yuck for going the leftfield route with their visual accompaniment to such a heavy but blissful tune.
