Speaking of Conan...

That last post really got me thinking about memorable musical performances on TV shows, and now that the caffeine has effectively kickstarted my brain, I just recalled a performance on Conan's show back when he was on NBC.  This was way back in the mid-nineties, when Conan and Andy were still perfecting their rapport, and basically mounting a broadcast version of a late-night public access talk show.  The demographic was still aimed squarely at drunken, stoned, and otherwise "altered" college kids, and Conan and his writing team were mining the same type of goofy humor that made his former comrades at SNL like Adam Sandler and Chris Farley into comedy superstarts.

It was also during this time that ska music experienced a resurgence (Third Wave, anyone?), as it was co-opted by the kids in the punk scene, who began incorporating it's bounding rhythms and staccato guitar notes into their own traditional hardcore and punk thrash.  This ska/punk hybrid, which became known as, uh, ska/punk music, spawned an endless number of bands with silly, tongue-in-cheek names like Reel Big Fish, The Suicide Machines, and (perhaps best of all), Skankin' Pickle.

Another of these bands was Goldfinger, and it is this band whose performance on Conan was and still is the most batsh*t insane musical performance I've ever seen on a TV show.  Before you watch the clip, I will just note that I don't recall much about the actual performance itself.  I think the song they played was Here In Your Bedroom but it really doesn't matter.  All that really matters is what happens after the performance.

Watch the clip here.

I would absolutely love to know exactly what combination of drugs the drummer had ingested before they went on.  Anyone know if that guy is even still alive?
