Oscars Schmoscars

A group photo of The Artist's Oscar haul from last night.

Did you watch The Oscars last night? Huh? Did you? Did you?!

Yes, we periodically tuned in here at RAJ HQ to watch the presentation of certain awards during last night's ceremony, even though we knew The Artist would be this year's film to be drooled over by the aging Academy members (though perhaps they just drool out of senility and lack of control over their bodily functions; the average age of Academy members is what, like 93?). In the Academy's usual round of bone-throwing, we were happy to see Alexander Payne win Best Adapted Screenplay for The Descendants, so the night was not a complete waste of time.

Things we could have done without:

Billy Crystal's schtick
Cirque du Soleil
Awkward and poorly executed presenter banner (Downey Jr. and Ben Stiller, especially)
Long acceptance speeches by winners of such high profile awards like Best Animated Documentary Short (just say "Thanks" and get the hell off the stage)

Also, would it kill you to get on a plane, Woody Allen? You make us endure your damned self-indulgent, wish-fulfillment time travel film, then you can't even show up to accept your damned award?

Thankfully, we can all go back to watching films and either praising or disparaging them without having to hear the "O" word for a few months.
