When we first heard that John Cusack would be playing Edgar Allan Poe in a murder mystery based on his fiction, we were disappointed that it wasn't Johnny Depp playing the talented but troubled nineteenth-century American writer (or even Robert Downey Jr.). We were doubly disappointed to learn that Tim Burton would not be directing, as it would seem an ideal fit for the quirky duo.
But John Cusack has always been one of our favorite actors, and he has transitioned from baby-faced, unconventional teen star to grizzled, unconventional leading man with roles in Grosse Pointe Blank, High Fidelity, and Identity. His face now bears a rugged, weathered, weariness that well-suits him to play the chronically-ill Poe.
The film is directed by James McTeigue (V for Vendetta) and is set for release on April 27. The trailer has just been released, and it succeeds in heightening our anticipation of the film even further. Check it below.
