Soundtrack to Space Travel

Keeping with our spontaneous "space" theme today, we here at RAJ have been whiling our Friday morning away by discussing what music we'd want to have as the soundtrack aboard our intergalactic cruiser, were we somehow able to travel through our solar system and explore the farthest reaches of the cosmos.

Raj suggested Space Hog. Raj can be a jerk off at times.

We decided to use this opportunity to hype a band that has been around for years, with whom you are most likely unfamiliar. The band is Windy & Carl, a husband and wife duo from Dearborn, Michigan. They make ambient, mostly instrumental music built around minimalist, layered guitar loops awash in gentle reverb that produce lush, ethereal soundscapes that are downright transcendent. Windy often provides hushed vocals, which usually consist of simple repetitive phrases or soft vocalizations of the accompanying melodies.

Windy & Carl's music is very cinematic in scope, with tracks regularly topping the ten minute mark. It's philosophical music, music for pondering the existence of humanity, for speculating on the nature of the universe. It's music that expresses our hope, fear, and uncertainty regarding the prospect of other life forms existing somewhere apart form us, along an alternate plane of time and space.

Listen to A Dream of Blue below, and see why the visuals are so apropos.

The duo just released a new album, We Will Always Be, on Chicago's Kranky Records.
