Song of the Week - Sugarcube by Yo La Tengo

Apologies for the late arrival of this week's SOTW. There was quite a bit of deliberation here at RAJ HQ, with Raj lobbying vehemently for a track off the new album by The Men, which he has had on repeat in the server room since it dropped two weeks ago. As we still need to review the album, we vetoed Raj's choice, but stay tuned for the review in the next few days!

Instead, we opted for a classic track from a band revered by critics and record store clerks alike. That band is Yo La Tengo, a three piece from New Jersey that's compiled a diverse and prolific discography since their inception way back in 1986. We have chosen our favorite jam from YLT, a scruffy lil' indie rock number titled "Sugarcube".

It has everything you want in an indie rock song circa the mid-90's, quick non-indulgent drum solo intro, guitars fuzzier than a homeless guy's teeth, mellow vocal harmonies, loads of crashing cymbals, dissonant solos, tambourine, and even a Moog synthesizer.

This song is loud, bouncy, and melodic; a RAJ classic if there ever was one. It's gold, Jerry, gold!

BONUS!! Check out the video, starring the band and the cast of sketch comedy cult classic, Mr. Show!
