It's a fine Monday here in Chicago - dark, grey, and rainy, with a general sense of gloom pervading the city. After a long weekend spent watching college hoops conference tournaments--particularly the Big Ten, for which our mighty Spartans prevailed--we require a jolt of sonic caffeine to compliment our usual morning coffee.
UK band Chapterhouse was part of the "shoegaze" sound of the early '90's, along with bands like Ride, My Bloody Valentine, and The Verve. The term was derived from the tendency of band members to stand motionless and stare down at their shoes while performing at live shows. The sound associated with these bands is a hazy, dreamy mix of layered guitars processed through sound manipulating effects pedals, coupled with loud, thundering drums and lots of heavy cymbal crashes.
For this SOTW, we're going with an uptempo, poppier selection from Chapterhouse, "Breather". This song is a whirlwind, with frantic, pounding drums, a classic Britpop guitar lead, and angelic vocal accompaniments by Stephen Patman and Andrew Sherriff. When we listen to this song, we envision a particularly climactic scene from some sort of teen sci-fi film, in which our hero hurtles through time and space to rescue the girl of his dreams (or something like that).
Have a listen and create your own dramatic film sequence in your head!
