The J Files: Dinosaur Jr. Meets Pet Shop Boys

J Mascis is revered in indie rock circles as a certified guitar god for his ability to melt the faces off of unsuspecting listeners. You'd think that a man who values maximum riffage, a man who has never been reluctant to embrace the screech and wail of an extended solo, would want nothing to do with the pre-programmed, electronic sound of a genre like synth pop. But our man J is proving to be more receptive to new and different sounds than perhaps most critics and fans give him credit.

Mascis has teamed up with Built to Spill bassist Brett Nelson's Electronic Anthology Project to rework a number of classic Dino Jr. songs as synth pop jams. The collection will be released on purple vinyl for Record Store Day (April 21), in a limited edition run of 500. A digital, CD, and standard vinyl release will follow.

We're about as excited about this project as we were about Mascis's recent acoustic solo release (which is to say "not very"). While we all pine for a new set of DJ face-melters, you can check out the synth pop version of "Tarpit" over at Pitchfork.

Speaking of face-melters and "Tarpit":
